Hiking Socks FAQs
If you have questions about our hiking socks, we have answers for you below:
-
Hikers typically need socks that match their footwear, terrain, cushioning preferences and weather conditions. We strongly advise against everyday cotton crew socks, as they soak up moisture, causing discomfort.
When you are shopping for socks, we suggest choosing a pair suited to your terrain. Choose lightweight socks such as the CoolMesh II for warmer, relatively smooth trails. These socks are designed with lightweight recycled polyester that delivers comfort without the bulk.
For your rougher hikes in cold and variable temperatures, we recommend socks with excellent cushioning and thermoregulating properties. Socks like our Merino Hike feature a wool outer layer that naturally helps regulate temperature and wick moisture, while delivering mid-weight cushioning.
-
Yes, the best hiking socks don't just cushion your feet but also protect them. Our Double Layer® technology is designed to reduce blister-causing friction. The inner layer of the sock moves with the foot while the outer layer absorbs the friction from the shoe, redirecting it between the two layers instead of your skin.
-
Breathable, moisture-wicking socks with vents. At Wrightsock, we offer socks made with hydrophobic fibers that actively draw moisture away from your foot to the sock's outer section, where it evaporates quickly. These fabrics also make our hiking socks breathable, while the mesh ventilation panels across the instep let heat escape, helping keep your feet cooler even on long hikes.
-
The most comfortable hiking socks combine a snug anatomical fit with a seamless toe and cushioning that is placed exactly where you need it. The seamless toes on both the single-layer and double-layer socks mean no rubbing seam inside your shoes.
We also designed our socks with an anatomical fit that reduces the risk of bunching or slipping. Finally, we added cushioning to consistently support you without adding bulk.
-
Yes, especially when they are matched to your activity. Cushioning helps absorb shock and reduce pressure on the bottom of your foot during high-impact and long-mileage hiking. For extreme hikes, choose our hiking socks with maximum cushion, but for shorter hikes on smooth roads, opt for lighter cushioning.
-
Hiking socks should be snug through the arch and heel with no bunching. Our Y-heel design provides anatomical fit. When positioned correctly, the Y-heel locks the heel in place to prevent slipping that can lead to blisters. If you are not sure which size to choose, you can check out our sizing chart. -
Both materials work well in hiking socks, particularly when paired with our Double Layer® mechanism. The right fabric for you will depend on the conditions. For rugged terrain, we suggest merino wool hiking socks, while lighter activities can benefit from synthetic yarn. -
With a design to handle the pressures of hiking, this collection is built to last on different trails. Our knit construction and durable materials give hikers socks that last and actually work.
